Department Leadership

Sonya L. Harper is the director of Mecklenburg County Criminal Justice Services. She is responsible for the oversight of the County’s pretrial services, recovery courts, re-entry services, forensic evaluations unit, and criminal justice research and planning. She is also responsible for promoting improvements in the local criminal justice system through interagency cooperation, coordination, and planning. 

She joined the County in 2016 as director. Previously, Sonya served as a project director for the National Drug Court Resource Center. Sonya also served as the director of Wake County Drug Treatment Courts.  

Sonya holds a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Master of Public Administration from Appalachian State University.
